Choosing Your Business

October 15, 2009 By: Mary Category: Personal Story |

What you do know is that you want to go into business for yourself.  What you might not know at this point is what shape that business will take.  This might be the most crucial decision you make, so proceed with patience.  Make sure that you fully research all of your options.  You may feel desperate to start bring money in, but desperation can lead you down the wrong path.  The first question you should ask yourself is:

What am I passionate about?  If health and nutrition is what inspires you, look into companies that sell health and nutrition products.  Do you love travel?  Writing?  Crafts?  Fashion?  Find what it is that excites you and explore that field.  Building a business that your are passionate about is a lot easier than trying to promote a product or a program that your heart is not in.

Now you have narrowed down the field to one or two areas that truly interest and inspire you.  In each of those fields, there are countless companies out there to choose from, and each have their own business plan, start up fees, company support, etc.  For example, if you think starting a home travel agency is for you, find a hosting agency that offers strong agent support, licensing, and on going training.  If you decide to join a network marketing company that sells health products, find a sponsor and team that provide support and training.

You have now narrowed it down to two or three companies.  Conduct a thorough investigation into each of these companies.  Find out how long they have been in business and what their reputation is.  Make sure you are aware of all fees and policies before joining.  Look over their compensation plan and make sure it works for you.  Find out what their success rate is, and how much of a demand there is for their products or services.  Make sure you are aware of any licensing requirements or insurance requirements for the business you chose.

Once you have made your choice, congratulations!  The truth is, now the work begins.  Start with a business plan and be specific.  Treat your home business as you would treat any traditional business.  Make a budget, schedule your time, and set goals.  Make a detailed marketing plan.  Be consistent, and in time your hard work will pay off.
